Open beta · free to try with play money
Maat is the wallet that makes paying feel like nothing at all. Scan a shop's code, see exactly who and how much, tap once. Top up in seconds, send money to friends by username, and never wonder where a yen went.
No app store. No card. Works on iPhone, Android and your computer.
Everything a wallet should do
No clutter, no menus to dig through. Open it, do the thing, close it.
Point your camera at a shop's code. Maat opens on the shop's name and the exact amount, so you always know what you are agreeing to before you tap.
Split a bill or pay a friend back with just their username. You see their name before you send, and the money lands instantly.
Add money from your bank and it is there before you put your phone down.
Installs from this website in two taps. No app store, no updates to chase, and it opens even without signal.
Tap twice, lose signal, try again. You are charged exactly once, every time.
Know before you pay

How it works
The whole thing takes about as long as reading this sentence.
The shop shows a code for your total. Open your camera, or the Maat app, and point.
Maat shows the shop's name and the amount. If it is right, tap Pay.
Your wallet updates, the shop's screen turns green, and you both get on with your day.
For shops
Create an account in the wallet, name your shop, and its till is ready in under a minute.
Built to be trusted
Money software earns trust on its worst day. So we gave Maat a lot of worst days, on purpose.
Every movement is recorded twice, once leaving and once arriving, the way banks have kept books for centuries. Money cannot appear or vanish.
We cut connections mid-payment, pressed buttons twice and crashed servers at the worst moment. Every payment still happened exactly once.
Everything travels encrypted. Your password is never stored, only a slow, salted fingerprint of it, and repeated wrong guesses lock the door.
Each day the wallet's books, the shops' payouts and the bank's statement are compared to the yen. They have to agree.
If something fails halfway through a payment, the system notices and finishes the job, or undoes it cleanly, without anyone lifting a finger.
How it is built, what was tested and how it performed under failure are all published, with the numbers.
Questions
Not yet. Maat is in open beta and every balance is play money: top-ups come from a simulated bank and nothing can be withdrawn. Everything else is real: real accounts, real payments between real people and shops, on the real system. It is the full experience without the risk.
Nothing. Installing the app, paying, topping up and sending are all free. Shops pay a small percentage of each payment they receive.
Maat installs straight from this website, with no app store in between. Open the install page on your phone and follow the two steps for iPhone or Android. It lands on your home screen like any other app and opens full screen.
No. Open the wallet and you have one. If you want to use it on another phone, or keep it if you lose this one, choose a username and a password, which takes ten seconds.
Tap Pay again when you are back. Maat recognises it as the same payment and charges you once, whether or not the first attempt got through.
Very little: a username and a display name if you choose them, and your wallet's activity. No e-mail, no phone number, no contacts, no location, no advertising and no trackers. The privacy page has the whole list.
