What Maat knows about you
Short, because there is not much. Last updated 8 October 2026.
What is stored
- A wallet ID. A random identifier made when you first open the wallet.
- A username and a display name, only if you choose to create an account. Other people can find you by your username and will see your display name.
- A fingerprint of your password, if you set one. The password itself is never stored and cannot be recovered from the fingerprint.
- Your wallet's activity: top-ups, payments, refunds and transfers, with their amounts, times and the other party.
- Request logs. The address you connect from and which pages and actions you requested, kept to run and protect the service.
What is not collected
No e-mail address, no phone number, no real name unless you type one as your display name, no contacts, no location, no advertising identifiers. There are no analytics scripts, no trackers and no cookies. Nothing is shared with or sold to anyone.
What stays on your device
Your browser keeps your wallet ID, a secret that keeps you signed in, and the last balance it saw, so the app can open without a connection. Signing out, or clearing the site's data, removes them. A shop's till keeps its API key in the browser tab until the tab is closed.
Who can see what
- A shop you pay sees the amount and a wallet ID, not your name.
- Someone you send money to, or who sends to you, sees your display name and username if you have them.
- The operator of the service can see every transaction, in order to run it and to investigate problems.
Where it runs
On a server in a commercial cloud data centre. Every connection is encrypted with TLS.
The beta
Maat is in open beta with play money. Data may be reset during the beta, which would remove wallets and their history. There is no way yet to download or delete an account yourself.
